Hallmarking

When working with precious metals, it is a legal requirement to hallmark any item exceeding a specific weight within its metal category. This allows for the protection of the consumer and guarantees the purchase of genuine materials. The London Assay office tests the precious metal content within the piece before applying the relevant hallmark and returning it back to the maker, ready to be sold to you.

It is your right to question whether an item has a hallmark before you buy. Any item which does not comply with the Hallmarking Act can be seized by trading standards, and can lead to prosecution and a fine of up to £5,000.
